Hyatt on the Bund Shanghai – What to Expect
This was my introduction to Hyatt in China and upon first arriving at the hotel it was a hub of action. I believe that this hotel is on par with a Grand Hyatt (I must have read this somewhere) and in the rooms it certainly felt like a Grand. However, in the lobby it felt more like a Regency. By that, I mean it was busy and there seemed to be something happening every night that I was there.
That first impression sums up the property quite well. The public areas have an energetic atmosphere, with a mix of business travelers, tourists, conferences, and events all happening at once. Yet once you make it up to your room, the experience becomes much calmer and more upscale.
As my first Hyatt stay in China, Hyatt on the Bund left a strong impression. It combines many of the things travelers come to Shanghai to experience: modern technology, impressive city views, large-scale hospitality, and a sense of constant activity.

Hyatt on the Bund feels like two hotels in one. The busy public areas have the energy of a Hyatt Regency, while the spacious rooms and Club Lounge experience feel closer to a Grand Hyatt. If you're a Hyatt elite member, particularly a Globalist, the lounge access alone adds significant value and makes this one of the more compelling Hyatt options in Shanghai.

The hotel delivers several quintessential modern China experiences all in one place. There's a robot delivering items, vending machines stocked with Shanghai Disney merchandise and other products, and technology integrated throughout the guest experience.
The Club Lounge is an excellent spot for breakfast, snacks, and drinks throughout the day. Being an early bird meant I often had the entire space to myself.
The rooms feel noticeably more premium than the public areas might suggest.
The gym is genuinely impressive and far better equipped than many hotel fitness centers.
Depending on your room, you'll be treated to some fantastic views of Shanghai and the surrounding skyline.
Club Lounge at the Hyatt on the Bund Shanghai
A Few Helpful Tips Before You Stay at Hyatt on the Bund Shanghai
If you have Club Lounge access, use it. The lounge was one of the highlights of my stay and provided a much quieter experience than the busier public areas.
Give yourself some time to learn the layout of the hotel. It's a large property with conference facilities and multiple venues spread throughout.
If views are important to you, request a room facing the Bund or Pudong skyline.
Expect a lively atmosphere rather than a boutique hotel experience. This is a full-service property that attracts a wide variety of guests.
What Are the Rooms Like at the Hyatt on the Bund Shanghai?
The guest room I stayed at in the Hyatt on the Bund Shanghai was spacious, comfortable, and well suited to both business and leisure travelers. Large windows help showcase the city, and the room feel considerably more luxurious than the bustling lobby might initially lead you to believe.
What Is the Location of the Hyatt on the Bund Shanghai Like?
The hotel sits on the northern end of the Bund area, making it a convenient base for exploring Shanghai. You're close enough to easily visit the famous waterfront and many of the city's key attractions while being slightly removed from some of the busiest tourist crowds. Depending on your plans, you may find yourself using taxis or ride-share services throughout your stay, but I found the location offered a good balance between convenience and comfort.
Is There Room Service at the Hyatt on the Bund Shanghai?
Yes, room service is available. My first night there I ordered a wonton soup and late it night it hit the spot. Given how easy it is to find excellent food throughout Shanghai, I found myself exploring the city rather than dining in my room, but it was nice to have the option after a long day of sightseeing or work.
Is There a Globalist Breakfast at the Hyatt on the Bund Shanghai?
There is, and it's served in the Club Lounge.
The breakfast offering includes a selection of Western hot foods alongside Chinese specialties. You'll also find the standard hotel breakfast staples including fruit, pastries, salads, cereals, coffee, tea, and juices.
The dining area itself is very pleasant, with large windows and plenty of natural light. For me, the biggest benefit was how peaceful it felt compared to the rest of the hotel. Arriving early often meant having much of the lounge to myself.
What Is the Gym Like at the Hyatt on the Bund Shanghai?
The gym is very well equipped with the leg machines that I normally use, along with free weights, cardio equipment, and a variety of resistance machines.
This is a proper fitness facility rather than an afterthought tucked into a spare room somewhere.
Interestingly, I actually had trouble finding it. You exit the lifts and there appears to be only one direction to walk, but when I arrived the area looked more like a closed conference center than an active fitness facility. I was so convinced I had gone the wrong way that I returned to reception just to confirm I was in the correct location.
Once I finally found it, I was pleasantly surprised.
One unexpected highlight was the collection of current magazines available to browse. I don't read or speak the language, but the photography and design were beautiful. As someone who loves print media, it felt like a small luxury that has become increasingly rare.
