Thompson Houston: What to Expect
The Thompson Houston was my introduction to the city, and what a first impression it made! Between the polished design, generous hospitality, and memorable food, I was genuinely happy to have chosen this property. I visited during Cowboy Carter weekend, and the entire city was buzzing with excitement of Beyonce returning to her hometown. The hotel felt like a serene, stylish bubble amid the energy of Houston, offering a perfect balance between comfort and cool.
This hotel is an excellent choice if you’re in town for a concert, having a staycation close to home, or planning a luxe weekend with friends. It’s the type of property that is the feature of a trip when you won’t necessarily be running around the city. If I had another night here, I would’ve carved out more time to relax by the pool and take full advantage of the amenities.
What Makes the Thompson Houston Special
Design-Forward and Spacious Rooms
The Thompson brand is known for its sleek interiors, and this location is no exception. My suite was modern and beautifully styled, with an impressive amount of space. It felt like a great setting for a girls’ weekend or getting a boutique-style experience with a bit more flair than your average chain hotel.
Tub with a View
One of my favorite features? The bathroom. Large, luxurious, and well laid out with dual vanities and an oversized tub framed by a stunning view. If you love getting ready for a night out with a touch of glam, or recovering with a soak the morning after, you’ll appreciate this thoughtful layout. I could easily see locals booking a staycation here for that bathroom alone.
The Pool and Outdoor Spaces
The rooftop pool is a destination in itself, with panoramic views of downtown Houston. Music was playing, guests were lounging in cabanas, and the shaded seating areas made for great photos and even better relaxation. It's an ideal spot to spend a sunny afternoon.
A Few Things to Know Before You Visit the Thompson Houston
Finding the entrance can be tricky. Our GPS took us down Allen Parkway and instructed a U-turn. If you miss the turn, you'll have to go quite a bit further before you can loop back. Watch closely for signage.
Valet parking only. You’ll pay the daily valet rate unless you're redeeming a free night or points, in which case the fee may be waived (as it was during my stay). You do get 24-hour in/out access, which is helpful if you’re using a car to get around.
Weekend noise warning. On Friday night, my room faced Allen Parkway, and a group of people had what looked like a car meetup with extremely loud music. I mean REALLY loud. I was on the 9th floor, and it still felt like the speakers were in my room. It went on until about 4:30am. If you’re sensitive to sound, request a quieter-facing room or avoid weekends.
There's a popular restaurant/bar next door. If you’re in the mood to go out without going far, you’ll have options right at your doorstep.
What is the Globalist Breakfast like at the Thompson Houston?
If you’re a World of Hyatt Globalist member, breakfast here includes an $80 credit at the on-site restaurant. It was more than enough for two of us to enjoy a full spread: entrees, sides, coffee, juice.
We did have to wait about 10 minutes for a table to free up, but again, that might have been due to how busy of a weekend it was in Houston.
A standout dish? The chilaquiles. They were exactly what I had hoped for and maybe the best restaurant version I’ve had. The French toast was another winner.
Is there Room Service at the Thompson Houston?
Yes, there is in-room dining, and it was available during my stay. I didn’t order any because I had a lot of barbecue food plans in Houston. The menu can be found printed on a tabletop near the coffee service in your room. Given the quality of the breakfast I had at the hotel I’m sure it’s good.
What is the Globalist Welcome Gift at the Thompson Houston?
Yes, there is in-room dining, and it was available during my stay. As a welcome gift, I received a bowl of seasoned potato chips and a bottle of sparkling Topo Chico—a Texas classic. A small touch, but one I really appreciated.
Thompson Houston vs. Hyatt Regency Houston Downtown
If you’re choosing between these two Hyatt properties, here’s a quick guide:
Choose the Thompson Houston if:
You want a design-led, resort-style experience
You’ll be spending time at the property and want to enjoy great amenities
Food and in-room dining are important to your stay
You love a modern, spa-like bathroom
Choose the Hyatt Regency Houston Downtown if:
You’re there primarily for a downtown event
You won’t be in the room much
You don’t have a car and want to be walkable to the action
You prefer the classic Hyatt experience (think large open atrium lobbies and retro charm)
For context: The Hyatt Regency Houston Downtown reminds me of other older Hyatt properties I’ve visited—like the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero in San Francisco and the now-closed Hyatt Regency Perth. Those with a nostalgic appreciation for mid-century hotel architecture might even prefer the feel.
Why Stay at the Thompson Houston?
This is a great spot if you're after modern luxury, comfort, and a stylish retreat. The Thompson Houston is ideal for a celebration weekend, a romantic getaway, or just recharging in a gorgeous space. While it’s not the best pick if you're super noise-sensitive or on a strict budget, it delivers big in terms of ambiance, food, and overall experience.
And if you're lucky enough to be visiting Houston during a major concert or cultural weekend? This is the kind of hotel that makes the trip feel even more special.
