Kissel Uptown Oakland- What to Expect

Daylight spillinginto the lobby of the Kissel Uptown Oakland hotel lobby with a blue text box "Kissel Uptown Oakland: What to Expect"

One of my best friends is based in Oakland and she had a celebration one of the nights that I was staying in the Bay Area, so once I was done with my usual stay at the Hyatt Place San Francisco Downtown, I took an Uber over the Bay Bridge to the East Bay.

One of the best parts of knowing someone from here is that you get an insight into some great local spots, and a built-in tour guide. I was there to catch up with her and go to a Flamenco performance at The Sound Room (it was incredible!) and got a chance to stay at a new-to-me hotel that is part of the Hyatt family of hotels.

What’s great about the Kissel Uptown Oakland

Boutique hotel vibe – the lobby and check-in area are open with high ceilings, and it has the feel of a stylish boutique hotel. I understood that was at least one wedding party staying there, I remember thinking that this was a great place for guests of an event to stay.

Globalist breakfast- this was great, the people working here were so friendly and looked after you. There was a warmth and familiarity to the hospitality. I felt like a regular even though I had never been there before.

Rooms are large – I had a room with two queen beds, the bathroom was large and full of lots of stylish details.

A few helpful tips before you stay at the Kissel Uptown Oakland

Take your cues from the locals

Oakland is so rich in culture and history, it’s worth asking the concierge for ideas of where to go and tips for getting around comfortably. As I mentioned before, my best friend has lived in Oakland for more than a decade, she catered to my interests which were used bookstores and boutiques. I especially enjoyed the trips to Marcus Books and the Black Panther Party Museum. You get a sense of the history and an understanding of the ongoing legacy and pride of the city.

Find out about the food scene

Oakland was recently named one of the best food cities in the U.S. by Conde Nast. The sheer variety and quality of culturally diverse food means it’s definitely worthwhile for you to plan your meals out during your stay.

The best shopping here is local

Part of what makes Oakland great is that there is a sense of community that you don’t necessarily get on the other side of the Bay Bridge, in my opinion. Get your souvenirs and shopping fix at any of the local boutiques along Piedmont Avenue.

Is there room service at the Kissel Uptown Oakland?

There is room service at the Kissel Uptown Oakland. I didn’t order anything on this stay because all my meals were already accounted and planned for. Given the quality of the food at breakfast I think there’s a likelihood that it’s good. However, as I mentioned before, you will be staying in a foodie hotspot so planning ahead of time or maybe researching places that deliver might be a better option.

Is there a Globalist breakfast at the Kissel Uptown Oakland?

Yes, the Globalist breakfast comprised of a drink and a main meal. Breakfast is held in the main dining area near the lobby. We ordered the Croque Madame and the Chilaquiles, both were great.

What is the gym like at the Kissel Uptown Oakland?

I found a good selection of free weights, cardio and a cable machine there. The space was fine to get a short workout in.

Why stay at the Kissel Uptown Oakland?

The Kissel Uptown Oakland is a great place to use as a launch pad to visit this vibrant city. It’s got all of the creature comforts you’d expect from a property that’s part of the Hyatt family and yet has that special boutique touch to it.

Although I was visiting from overseas, I could very much see staying here for a staycation or special girls’ weekend.
