Grand Hyatt Tokyo – What to Expect

My first trip to Tokyo began with touching down in Japan quite late at night. I made it through the fluorescent lighting of the chaotic but somehow functional arrivals area, with passport kiosks and other weary travelers. Descending the escalators, I eyed the giant decals of Nintendo characters on the walls, eventually making my way to the pick-up area and the driver I had booked to take me to the Grand Hyatt Tokyo.

I was there in winter, and the bare-leaf trees were festively lit up along the streets. I’ll admit that I came on my trip without knowing much about the specific area of this hotel, but as soon as I got into my room, I could see Tokyo Tower in the distance. The lights of the city in the evening, as my first introduction to the country, were more than I could have hoped for.

It’s the kind of moment you look forward to when you travel: seeing something you’ve only ever seen in books and movies. And from the comfort of this beautiful hotel, I was able to sit in awe of the fact that I was really here.

The Grand Hyatt Tokyo was my introduction to staying in Tokyo, and it set a wonderful tone for the trip. It’s a luxury hotel with a fantastic location, attentive service, and the kind of atmosphere that makes returning to your room at the end of a long day a welcome relief.

What’s great about the Grand Hyatt Tokyo?

The Roppongi Hills location

The Grand Hyatt Tokyo is in Roppongi Hills, putting it right in the center of great shops, restaurants, and entertainment. It’s a particularly appealing location if you want to experience a more polished, modern side of Tokyo, with plenty to explore without having to travel too far.

And again, the views.

I will admit that I spent most of the stay here on a full-day private tour of Tokyo, so I didn’t get to explore the neighborhood as much as I would have liked.

One thing I particularly appreciated was that the hotel felt like a destination in itself. After a busy day of sightseeing, it was nice to return somewhere that felt calm and removed from the chaos of the city, even though I was still very much in the middle of it.

If you’re visiting Tokyo for the first time, I think there’s something to be said for staying somewhere that makes those first impressions of the city feel special.

The Grand Club Lounge

As soon as I got to the hotel, I was whisked up to the Grand Club Lounge to check in, and I just made it in time before they closed service for food and drinks for the evening.

The food in this club lounge was much more refined than what I’ve experienced in other club lounges, both for evening bites and breakfast.

That was one of the things that stood out to me. Club lounges can sometimes feel like an added convenience rather than a particularly memorable part of a hotel stay, but here, the food felt like a more considered part of the overall experience.

The Grand Club is located on the 10th floor and offers breakfast, evening cocktails and canapés, along with refreshments throughout the day. The lounge also has an outdoor terrace with a Japanese garden, which sounds like a lovely place to spend some time between exploring the city.

For me, the appeal of a lounge is more than just having somewhere to eat. It’s the convenience of being able to settle in after a long journey, enjoy something to eat without having to venture back out, and start the following morning with breakfast already taken care of.

That was particularly welcome on this trip. I arrived late, and being able to check in upstairs and enjoy the lounge before heading to my room made the arrival feel much more seamless.

If you’re considering booking a room with Club access, I think it’s worth considering how much time you’ll actually spend at the hotel. If you’re planning to be out from morning until late at night, you might not get as much value from the lounge. But if you enjoy having a comfortable place to relax, or you’re travelling on a more leisurely schedule, it can add a lot to the experience. My Globalist status gave me automatic access to the lounge.

Just remember that the Grand Club has set service hours, so if you arrive late in the evening as I did, you may only catch the tail end of the food and drink service.

The service

I’ve mentioned in other blog posts here that I have a challenging relationship with some of the more hands-on service you find at exceptional hotels like the Grand Hyatt Tokyo.

I love to roll my own luggage. Some places are so adamant about helping that I’ve learned when not to fight it.

And I don’t mean this as a bad thing at all. There’s something kind of sweet about a place that is so focused on the kind of experience they want you to have that you just trust them, and they get it so right.

The Grand Hyatt Tokyo is the kind of hotel where the service feels like an important part of the overall experience. From being escorted to the Club Lounge to check-in, to the attention given to guests throughout their stay, there’s a sense that the team wants you to feel looked after.

For some travelers, this level of attention is exactly what makes a luxury hotel special. For others, especially those of us who prefer a little more independence, it can take some getting used to.

I tend to appreciate service most when it feels natural and intuitive, rather than something that draws attention to itself. And at a hotel of this caliber, it’s easy to understand why the team takes such pride in getting those details right.

Ultimately, the experience felt polished and welcoming, and it was a lovely way to begin my time in Japan.

The rooms and the views

One of my favourite things about my stay was the view from my room.

After arriving in Tokyo late at night, I wasn’t expecting that first glimpse of Tokyo Tower to be quite so memorable. I had barely had time to settle in before I found myself looking out at the city lights, taking in the fact that I was finally here.

The Grand Hyatt Tokyo has a contemporary style, with rooms that balance modern furnishings and natural materials.

A few helpful tips before you stay at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo

  • Consider whether Club access is worth it for your itinerary. If you’ll be spending time at the hotel for breakfast and evening canapés, the Grand Club can be a great addition. If you’ll be out sightseeing all day, think about how much you’ll realistically use it.

  • Check the lounge hours before you arrive. The Grand Club lists breakfast from 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and evening cocktails from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Arriving late can mean missing much of the evening food service.

  • Make a room-view request if it matters to you. I loved seeing Tokyo Tower from my room, but views depend on the room you’re assigned. A request is worthwhile, although it shouldn't be treated as a guarantee.

  • Allow some time to enjoy the hotel. Tokyo is a city where it’s easy to fill every minute with sightseeing. Even if you’re only staying for a night or two, it’s worth leaving a little time to enjoy the lounge, your room or the hotel's facilities.

  • Think about your transport plans. Roppongi Hills is a convenient base, but Tokyo is a large city. Check the nearest stations and plan your journeys around the places you want to visit, particularly if you have an early start.

  • If you're a World of Hyatt Globalist, check your benefits before booking. Breakfast, lounge access and room upgrades can make a difference to the value of a stay, but the exact benefits depend on the programme terms, room booking and availability.

Frequently asked questions about the Grand Hyatt Tokyo

Is there room service at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo?

Yes. The hotel offers in-room dining, which is useful if you arrive late, want a quiet meal in your room or simply don't feel like going out after a long day in Tokyo.

I'd recommend checking the current in-room dining menu and service hours directly with the hotel, as menus and availability can change.

For me, one of the advantages of staying at a hotel like this is having the option to enjoy a slower evening without feeling that you need to leave the property to find something to eat.

Is there a Globalist breakfast at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo?

Yes. World of Hyatt Globalist members are eligible for complimentary breakfast under the program’s applicable benefits. At the Grand Hyatt Tokyo, the Grand Club Lounge offers breakfast for guests with Club access, including a buffet of Japanese and Western dishes.

If you already have Grand Club access through your room or suite, breakfast is one of the lounge benefits included in that access.

What is the Globalist gift at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo?

I found a beautifully presented box of rice crackers in my room. Better than I’ve been able to buy at any Asian store back home. I’m the kind of person that immediately eats the snacks left for me – what can I say?

What is the gym like at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo?

The hotel has Nagomi Spa and Fitness, which includes a fitness centre with cardio and strength-training equipment. The fitness facilities are part of a broader wellness offering that also includes a swimming pool, sauna and bathing facilities.

Why stay at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo?

For me, the Grand Hyatt Tokyo is about the combination of location, service and those little moments that make a trip memorable.

I have noticed that any time of year the Hyatt properties in Tokyo are on the premium end of stays in the country – and exorbitantly high (sometimes 4 times the price) during the March and April cherry blossom season. It seems to occupy the higher end category when it comes to accommodation. However, having stayed here and in the Park Hyatt Tokyo, I do believe the price point is relatively justified for what you get in terms of service, quality of food, and consistency of experience. The prices are more on par with what I’ve experienced in Europe (as opposed to the prices in most Asian Hyatt properties) but the service is impeccable. Just something to keep in mind.

Roppongi Hills gives you a convenient base for exploring Tokyo, while the hotel's dining and lounge facilities offer a comfortable place to retreat to when you need a break from the city. The service is attentive, the rooms feel polished, and the overall experience has the kind of considered luxury you'd expect from a Grand Hyatt.

Should I stay at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo or the Park Hyatt Tokyo?

Having stayed at these properties back-to-back, I can say they are both exceptional stays. I will say the main difference for me was that, as usual, the Park Hyatt Tokyo was my ‘cocoon time’…what I call the last two or so days before I head home at the end of my vacation. I know I will be staying on property the entire time so I book my most luxurious stay then. I also have that stay written in another blog post.

The Grand Hyatt Tokyo served as a better base for seeing the city in my opinion. You really can’t go wrong with either.
